What's involved?

Volunteers at Acorn Bank Watermill will be involved in:

• Providing a warm and friendly welcome to all visitors, including children, to the watermill, enhancing their visit by assisting in the provision of information on the history of the mill and the operation of the machinery. Reference materials are available.
• Developing knowledge of other areas of Acorn Bank and its stories, including the relationship with the mill, to help visitors receive accurate and relevant information to assist with the whole of their visit.
• Being attentive to the safety of visitors to the mill and the prevention of damage to the building and its contents. Reporting any concerns to the Duty Manager.
• Assisting in the operation of the waterwheel and associated machinery for the enjoyment of visitors to the mill (This will only be possible when the conditions of the risk assessment are met and there are two volunteers present at the mill).
• Participation in occasional work parties if desired, assisting in carrying out maintenance of the mill and the mill race.
• Assisting with other events at or relating to the mill.
• Becoming familiar with and then following the ABWT's Health and Safety Policy at all times
• There may be other activities where we could use your help, such as fundraising and administration

Time commitment

Mill operation 1 to 4 sessions a month, weekends and bank holidays, from March to October; Sessions last up to 6 hours. Maintenance sessions take place every Tuesday for up to 6 hours.

What you need to wear

Appropriate clothing for being in outbuildings and sturdy comfortable shoes. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if required, will be provided

Training Resources

You will receive full and training and the opportunity to get to know about all aspects of a working mill.

Expenses

Expenses will only be paid in pre-agreed circumstances, for example for off-site training courses.
