Mill Yard and Farm

The mill was run in conjunction with a small farm. The yard has been re-cobbled over the entire area of what would have been a typical busy farmyard. The barn on the opposite side of the yard to the mill and the pig sties situated to the right of the barn were part of this farm.

The barn is typical of those found throughout Cumbria. It is a 'bank barn' built into the side of a steep slope so that cart access is given to the first floor. A few cows would have been kept in this barn with winter hay stored above. Pig sties were common at mills. The miller, who often kept the local boar, would use waste from the mill to help feed the pigs. All the small-scale farming activities helped provide extra income for the miller and his family.
